All the brews are pretty bland with most people favoring the Blonde, probably from living so close to "Budweiser City". The food is good with reliable service. It is in a good location in old St Charles and close the the Ameristar Casino. A nice place for a casual meal but would not recommend for the brews. Not a place to hang out with your buddies to enjoy a cold brew.

With some extra time on my hands, I returned a year after my first visit to see if the place had gotten better. It hasn't. Same dreck for beer. Different bartender--same indifferent service. I haven't tried the food here, but it must be great to compensate for what they call beer. The reviewer below who thought this is awesome beer can have all of mine from Trailhead as I won't be returning for more. On a positive note, the decor is very nice.

Visited on a Tuesday at mid-afternoon, post lunch/pre-happy hour. Only one other customer in the bar area. Shift change at 3:00 brought a second bartender and about 5 more customers. Service went from inattentive to dismal. Had to flag down a bartender each time. Had the 6 beer sampler (Pilsner, Blonde, "Raspberry flavored beer", Amber, Brown, and Stout.) Previous reviews seem to sum up the beer pretty well. None were worth having a second taste. In fact, they all taste just like a variation of the others, with the color getting darker as you work your way down the list. Do they just add food coloring? The only exception to this was the raspberry, which was in a nasty category all to itself. As much as I hate to say I've tried some of the A-B products, if I had a choice, I'd choose some of the A-B "micro" brews over Trailhead. Unless you are in St. Charles already, and with a fine BP like Schlafly's just a few miles away,I'd recommend you skip Trailhead and go see what great microbrew is all about.

Ugh! I have NEVER had such poor service in my entire life! The barman never made eye contact with us, never apologized that it was taking him forever to get to us, never checked on our beer levels, he didn't get to our food order until the beer was gone and by then we were in no mood to spend another hour or two waiting for it. I had been here once before & wasn't overly impressed; after the way we were treated this time, I will never return.

PROBABLY THE CLEANEST BREWERY/RESTAURANT I HAVE EVER BEEN IN. THIS BUILDING IS AMAZING AND THE SURROUNDING SHOPS/AREA IS VERY COOL. PERFECT FOR A DAY TRIP TO HAVE A FEW BEERS AND WALK DOWN MAIN STRRET. BEERS ARE MADE FOR THE MASSES BUT WELL DONE AND WITHOUT ANY FLAWS. THE PUMPKIN ALE WAS RIGHT ON. NO HOPPY BEERS BUT STILL MADE WELL.

The building is very cool, as is the surrounding area, but the beers are made for the masses and the bottled beer selection is mainly bud/miller/coors products. There is not a single hoppy beer in the building...on tap or bottled. Overall, still a decent place to pick up a bite to eat...but don't plan on getting great brews. Personally, I'd rather go down to the Ameristar casino down the street and hit the sports bar. The food is better and the beer selection, while not great, is certainly better.

They had six beers on tap. The brown and stout really stood out to me. They both had nice roasty flavors. The food is great and the bartender was great as well. A little way out of St. Louis but worth the trip. Plus there is a really cool museum of Lewis and Clark.

Such a disappointment. A beautiful old building in a beuatiful setting on the banks of the river in a jewel of a little town. However, the beer was just awful. They have no idea what they are doing. It's a shame. b/c someone who cared about his beer could do great things with this location.

Stopped by on a Tuesday night. I had 2 low body unimaginative beers along with a pizza that was pretty tasty. Sorry folks I have to agree the beer is poor, the food is good, the building is very nice.

Like the last reviewer I had the sampler. The stout was the weakest thing I have ever tasted--like everything walked through on stilts and we were left with colored water. Nice place, but the brew isn't worth the stop.

Like any brewpub, I come for the beer, not the food nor the ambiance. To put it mildly, this beer was terrible. Bland, tasteless, thin, weak. I ordered a sampler like I always do, and I left 2 unfinished. I have never done that. The raspberry wheat was probably the worse beer I have ever had. On top of this waste of time and money, on the way out to my car, I peaked into the spent grain barrels, and there were used packages of liquid hop extract. Any homebrewer will be shocked at this. If you're not a HB, it is a cheap, ridiculous way to add a hop bitterness, flavor or aroma to your beer. The Ironic thing was, Trailhead had none of these 3 hop characteristics. I would have rather gone to Anheiser-Busch in St. Louis.

Well let's start off by saying that this review will date back to September 2004. Due to my lost password, I have been unable to access Pubcrawler. I'm back! We went for dinner on a weeknight. It was still warm outside and I wore a regular sleeved Harley T-shirt. Upon arriving, a 20 minute ride from our hotel, I was greeted by a sign that states, T-shirts on male guests are not allowed. Now I wasn't going to drive bakc and get a shirt. The hostess, stated that the manager would be right down to speak with us. He brought along an obnoxious orange polo type shirt that was 2 sizes too big. At least he had that to offer, much appreciated, thou embarrassing. Upon sitting down at our table, across the room was a group of girls early 20's, one of them wearing a halter top, full exposure of her middle. Now I like a look like that, no doubt, but come on! Discrimination at it's best at this place. Anyway, beware of their male dress code should you visit.
The food was great, Fish & Chips for me, Wife had Petite rib w/salad. Toddler had a pizza. Pricey no doubt, but consider the area. The river front area of St. Charles is a tourist trap area. My beer selection was the fruit beer, very smooth, the ale was tasty, not bitter. The selection could have been bigger, but it was okay. I would recommend Trailhead for the Beer & Food as well as the atmosphere.

Sorry, these beers are bland and unimaginative. They have a very attractive building. It must have cost a lot to refurbish because the food was pretty expensive and about as impressive as the beer. It was not very busy when we went on Sat. afternoon, so we attempted to make conversation with the bartender. We asked him a few questions about the beer and the building but he was not too interested in talking. We went to O'Fallon immediately after and had exactly the opposite experience. If you are really into beer, blow this place off.

We travel to St. Charles about eight times a year just to hang out on main street. Usually stay 3-5 days. Trails head is the best! We love the blonde beer. Two bartenders, Missy and Heather are really nice people, and I think work very hard. It is a VERY busy place. I've NEVER had a bad experience there. We have made several friends in the area just by talking at the bar. Everyone in the town just seems so friendly. Can't say enough good things. Wish the trals head was by our home, st. charles ILLINOIS!!

I've spent 4 yrs in Germany and travelled just about everywhere in Europe. Also spent some time travelling the states... Selection is great, in Europe, good pubs only offer a few choices of their drafts. Beers weren't too overpowering and right on target. My family dabbles in microbrewing and it's definitely an art to the science!! Keep up the good work:)
